Project Members

Dr. Demoulias S. Charis received the Dipl. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the AUTH, in 1984 and 1991, respectively. Currently he is Associate Professor with the Electrical Machines Laboratory, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, AUTH. His research interests include power electronics, harmonics, electric motion systems, and the integration of renewable energy sources in the power grid. He has 50 publications in the fields of renewable energy sources, power quality and microgrids. From 1991 to 2003 he co-founded Alteren SA, a technical consulting company offering consultancy services in private and public energy-saving and renewable energy projects. From 1997-2003 he also acted as contractor for power quality projects (harmonic filters), industrial energy-saving projects and PV installations (stand-alone and grid-connected). He has participated as coordinator or partner in seven EU-funded projects and six national projects. Since 2011 he has been evaluator and reviewer of 25 EU-funded projects. He is senior member of IEEE and member of the Technical Chamber of Greece.

Dr. Georgios K. Kryonidis received his Diploma and PhD degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2013 and 2018, respectively. Currently, he is a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the same University and an adjunct Lecturer at the Department of Electrical Engineering of Western Macedonia University of Applied Sciences. His research interests include distributed generation and storage, renewable energy sources, and smart grids operation and control. He has a 5-year experience in European research projects (FP7, H2020, Interreg, etc.). He has been a scholar of the Research Committee of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2016-2017) and of the Greek State Scholarships Foundation (2017-2018). Finally, he is a member of IEEE and of the Technical Chamber of Greece.

Daniela Feilmeier obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical engineering and a Master’s Degree in Digital Factory at “Lucian Blaga” University in Sibiu, Romania. After a five years experience as a production planner for circuit breakers at Siemens followed by a post as sales support engineer at Kromberg & Schubert in Abensberg, Germany, she joined FENECON in 2017. Daniela is holding a position as Product Manager and is responsible for International Business Development. She has a strong organizational talent and for EASY-RES coordinates the electrical engineering and software departments involved at FENECON.

Aleksandra received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the School of Electrical Engineering, University of Belgrade, Belgrade, Serbia, in 2012, 2013, and 2017, respectively. Between 2012 and 2018 she was a Teaching Assistant with the School of Electrical Engineering, University of Belgrade, and an Assistant Professor from 2018 to 2019. In 2019, she worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Electrical Engineering ESAT – ELECTA, KU Leuven and in the Institute EnergyVille, Genk, Belgium. From January 2020, Aleksandra has been works as an Assistant Professor at the TU Delft, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science. Aleksandra’s research topics are related to the circuit theory, control and stability analysis of the nonlinear switching power converters and the hybrid power systems employing power electronics. She has worked on circuit theory concepts applied to multiport power system analysis, with a special focus on HVDC systems, harmonic stability assessment of the hybrid power systems consisting of the passive and active components, impedance-based MMC and other VSC modeling. Also, she has developed multiple nonlinear controlling algorithms relying on the Lyapunov theory, and model predictive control methods used for stable and efficient control of switching converters and the systems consisting of renewable sources (like PV panels) and power converters. Within EASY-RES Aleksandra is working on WP6.

Dr. Juan Manuel Mauricio received the degree in electrical engineering from the National University of Comahue, Neuquen, Argentina, in 2003, and the Master’s and Dr. Eng. degrees from the University of Seville, Seville, Spain, in 2007 and 2009, respectively. Since 2004, he has been with the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Seville, where he is currently an Associate Professor. His primary research interests include power systems and electrical machine control, renewable generation, voltage source converters-based applications, and electrical vehicles. He has 27 publications in the fields of power systems modelling and control and renewable energy sources. Since 2011 he co-founded Ingelectus SL, a technical consulting company offering consultancy services in electrical engineering including development and installation of power plant controllers for renewable plants around the world. He has participated as partner in two EU-funded projects and seven national projects. He is member of IEEE.

George P. Papaioannou, PhD studied Mechanical Engineering (energy concentration) at the Stevens Institute of Technology, NJ, U.S.A (BEng and MEng), and obtained his PhD from the University of Patras, Greece. He also studied Social Sciences (Labor Economics) at the London School of Economics (LSE), Management in Henley Business School, U.K and Strategic Modeling and System Thinking at the London Business School, U.K. He held various engineering and management positions in Greek companies, accumulated almost thirty-five years of experience in the Power Industry and has taught in colleges and technological institutions in Greece. He is currently the Director of the newly established Research, Technology & Development Division of ADMIE SA. He is also an adjunct researcher at the Center of Research and Analysis of Nonlinear Systems (CRANS) of the University of Patras and he is the author of two textbooks and of a number of peer-reviewed papers in leading scientific journals, focusing on the modelling of energy markets and power systems.

Dr. Angelos K. Marnerides is Assistant Professor in Computer Networking in the School of Computing & Communications (SCC) at Lancaster University, UK. Prior to his current post, he was a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the department of Computer Science at Liverpool John Moores University, UK. In the past, he held postdoctoral appointments in the ECE department at Carnegie Mellon University, USA, in DCC at the University of Porto, Portugal and in SCC at Lancaster University, UK. He also held visiting researcher appointments in the SCC, Lancaster University, UK, and the EE department at University College London (UCL), UK.  Dr. Marnerides has extensive research experience in the area of network resilience with particular interests in network security and smart-grid security. His research philosophy is in designing algorithms and systems with strong theoretical foundations and in providing practical data-driven implementations that are deployable in the real world. His research has been funded by several bodies in the UK (EPSRC, Innovate UK, GCHQ), the EU (FP6, FP7, H2020), the US (NSF) and Portugal (FCT).   Within EASY-Res Dr. Marnerides will be working in all WP4 activities and concentrate on E2E security and resilience for the EASY-RES communication infrastructure.

Technical team leader of the electricity team at Stadtwerke Landau a.d.Isar for almost six years now. Mr. Damböck has received his Diploma of electrical engineering from the University of Applied Sciences at Deggendorf in 2010 at straight on started working as programmer for special machine construction at Sonplas before taking on the role of the head of the electrical department at Stadtwerke Landau a.d.Isar at 2012. Within EASY-RES Robert will be working on various topics within different WPs contributing as a Distribution System Operator (DSO).

Maximilian Irlbeck has been working at the ZD.B since January 2016 and since April 2020 at Bayern Innovativ due to the takeover of ZD.B through Bayern Innovativ. He is responsible for the topic platform “Digitization in the energy sector” and works on innovation for the future of energy. As coordinator of the topic platform, he is the contact person for all energy related questions at the ZD.B. Before working at the ZD.B, Mr. Irlbeck worked for 6 years at the TU München, at the chair for software & systems engineering at the department of informatics. He led several research projects in the energy sector, e.g. he was evaluating E-Energy, a research project with 6 model regions in Germany with a total volume of 160 Mio. Euros, for the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy from the ICT perspective. Maximilian is an expert in the field of reference architectures for smart energy systems and wants to bring forward new ideas for the future of energy in Europe.

Dr. Konstantinos O. Oureilidis received his Diploma (2008) and PhD degrees (2015) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and his Bachelor degree in Business Administration from the University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki (2015). Currently, he works with the Hellenic Power Exchange (HEnEX) and he is a post-doc researcher at AUTh. During the winter semester of 2016-2017, he was an adjunct lecturer for the course of Electric Motion Systems in AUTh and he was a lab assistant for the course of Power Electronics at the Department of Electrical Engineering of Western Macedonia University of Applied Sciences. During the academic years 2015-2017, he received funding from IKY Fellowships of Excellence for postgraduate studies in Greece – Siemens Program for his post-doc research. He has extensive experience with Horizon 2020, Med and solar-era.net Projects, while he was a member of the writing research team of EASY-RES. He has also worked as a freelancer conducting energy projects, technical and economical projects for investment laws, and inspecting the design and performance of photovoltaic projects. His fields of interest include the microgrids, control of power electronics, distributed generation, renewable energy sources and protection. He is a member of IEEE and member of the Technical Chamber of Greece.

Dr. Martinez-Ramos received the Industrial Engineering degree, major in Electrical Engineering, in 1988, and the PhD in Industrial Engineering in 1994, both from the University of Seville, Spain. Since 1990 he has been with the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Sevilla, becoming Full Professor in 2007. He served as Director of the School of Engineering of the University of Seville from October 2010 to January 2015, and as the Director of the Industrial Engineering graduate and postgraduate programs from 2015 to 2018. He is co-author of five books published by prestigious international publishers, and has co-authored over 50 papers in research journals and more than 60 papers at international conferences. Besides, he has supervised five PhD theses. His research activity is developed within the research group “Power systems” led by Prof. Antonio Gómez-Expósito. He is very active in R&D activities with electric utilities, including the main generation, transmission and distribution companies of the Spanish Power System. Dr. Martinez-Ramos is member of the Professional Association of Industrial Engineers of Western Andalusia, and Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, IEEE.

Andrea Deisenrieder joined ZD.B in August 2018 and Bayern Innovativ in April 2020 when Bayern Innovativ took over ZD.B. She is mainly working on dissemination and exploitation in EASY-RES and supports the topic platform “Digitization in the energy sector” of ZD.B. Prior to ZD.B, Andrea gained extensive experiences in international cooperation. She has been supporting diverse evaluations of global and regional development programs with international organizations and is dedicated to promoting sustainability in the energy sector and beyond. Andrea hold a Master’s degree in Sociology, Psychology, and Communications of Munich University.

Umer Mushtaq is a Ph.D. candidate at TU Delft. He received his B.Sc. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore, Pakistan. He worked three years at Fatima Group LTD as a project and design engineer. In September 2013, he was awarded an Erasmus Mundus joint Master Degree Scholarship from EACEA European Union (Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency). He has a master degree in Sustainable Transportation and Electrical Power Systems.  During this prestigious, integrated and international master degree programme, he studied at the University of Oviedo, Spain (Program Coordinator), the  Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra, Portugal and the  University of Nottingham, UK. In his master degree thesis at the University of Oviedo, Spain, he designed, developed and tested a prototype of Hybrid Reactive Power Compensation System (Hybrid-STATCOM) for low voltage applications with OPAL RT hardware in the loop system. Prior to his Ph.D. position, he worked at Grupo ISASTUR S.A Spain as design and commissioning engineer on electrical and instrumentation project of Skangas Oy LNG Terminal at Pori, Finland.

Evyatar received his diploma as an engineer in Renewable Energy Management from the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Science in Freising, Germany. He started working with EASY-RES as part of his studies as a working student supporting the public utility company Stadtwerke Landau a.d.Isar. After finishing his studies, he fully took over EASY-RES related and other “Horizon 2020” projects tasks for Stadtwerke Landau a.d.Isar. Besides working in Landau, Evyatar is actively engaged with other “Horizon 2020” projects, “ERA-Net”, and other projects in the fields of renewable energies and environmental protection.

Christopher Schneider is engineer, obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in “Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency” and a Master’s Degree in Applied Research at University of Applied Sciences in Regensburg, Germany. He gained two year’s experience as project manager at an innovative utility company near Regensburg, Germany, building a smart grid for new private houses with supply of electricity, local heat and glass-fiber internet connection. In September 2017 he joined the team of Stadtwerk Haßfurt GmbH. Christopher is holding a position as Project Manager and is responsible for Business Development. He has a wide knowledge of the energy industry and for EASY-RES coordinates the technical and commercial departments involved at Stadtwerk Haßfurt GmbH.

Milos Cvetkovic is an Assistant Professor at TU Delft. He received the B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Belgrade, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA. Before joining TU Delft, he was a Postdoctoral Researcher at MIT, Cambridge, USA. Milos is working on research challenges of renewable energy integration. He is interested in modeling and control of engineering and economic processes for easier integration of renewable generation and flexible demand. He is fond of combining mathematical methods with numerical simulations. He has strong knowledge of control theory and optimizations. Within EASY-RES he will mainly be working in WP6 on evaluation and validation.

Dr. Anish Jindal is a Senior Research Associate at the School of Computing and Communications at Lancaster University, UK. Prior to this, he worked as a senior research fellow at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research during his Ph.D. at Thapar University, India. He has many research contributions in the area of smart grid, data analytics, vehicular cyber-physical systems, wireless networks, and security. Some of his research findings are published in top cited journals such as IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Communication Magazine, IEEE Network, Future Generation Computer Systems, and Computer Networks. He is a member of the ACM, IEEE, and is actively involved in various working groups of IEEE on smart grid and smart cities.

Ali Alshawish is a research associate at the chair of Computer Networks and Computer Communications at the University of Passau, Germany. His research interests include network security, computer networks, privacy-preserving using encryption, energy systems, surveillance technologies, and critical infrastructure protection focusing on risk and security management. He holds a master’s degree in Computer Science and Automation from the Ilmenau University of Technology, Germany. Within EASY-RES, he is working in WP4 on the topic of developing an ICT infrastructure for the EASY-RES ecosystem.

Achilleas Tsitsimelis received his Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from National Technical University of Athens in 2013. His focus was on Electric Energy Systems and Electric Machines. After his graduation, he worked as a research assistant in the Smart Grids Research Unit of the Electrical and Computer Engineering School where his main research interests lied in the field of control and optimization on medium voltage networks. In 2014, he participated in the Marie Curie Initial Training Network Advantage-FP7 as a research engineer in the Center of Telecommunication Technology of Catalunya within the Advanced Signal and Information Processing department. Since 2014 he is pursuing his PhD in the Signal Theory and Communications department of the Polytechnic University of Catalunya. His main research activities are power system state estimation, statistical signal processing and convex optimization for smart grids. Currently, he is working within the Research and Development Department of the Greek Independent Power Transmission System Operator. His contribution to EASY-RES will be mainly focused on the activities of WP1, WP2, WP5 and WP6.

Spyros Gkavanoudis was born in Larissa, Greece, in 1983. He received the diploma degree in foto.jpgelectrical and computer engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, in 2008, and the Ph.D degree in power electronics from the same university under the mentorship of Dr. Charis Demoulias, in 2014. Currently, he is a post-doctoral researcher in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His primary research activities lie in the fields of power electronic converters, wind energy conversion systems, modeling and contol of electrcal machines, microgrids and energy storage systems. In particular, his research focuses on the design of dedicated power and control systems for wind turbine generators. His doctoral dissertation discussed the integration of supercapacitor energy storage systems in inverter-interfaced wind turbine generators, in order to enhance their fault ride-through capability, as well as to improve wind power quality. Since 2008 he has been with the Electrical Machines Laboratory, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki as a Research Assistant. He served as a teaching assistant the undergraduate courses of Electrical Machines (II & III), Power Electronics (I & II) and Electric Motion Systems. Currently he is also working as Electrical Engineer at ILVIEF Company, located in Volos. His main responsibilities are the study, design and commissioning of MV substations and LV distribution boards.

Nefeli received her Diploma and PhD degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2012 and 2020, respectively. Currently, she is a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the same University. Since 2013, she is research and teaching assistant led by Associate Prof. Charis Demoulias, at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of AUTH. Her research interests include power quality, interface of renewable energy sources with the grid, and power electronic converters

Dr. A. Mauthe is Reader in Networked Systems, and Associate Dean for External Engagement and Internationalisation at the Faculty of Science and Technology at Lancaster. Andreass focuses his research on network management, and autonomic and resilient systems, alongside content networking and adaptive networks. He has been with Lancaster University since 2005; previous to that he worked in industry in the area of content management systems, where he led a group of more than 25 developers and software engineers. Within the project he will contribute through his expertise in ICT based systems architecture and resilience, which is central to the work in WP4. He will be leading Task 4.2 and contribute to structural resilience aspects of Task 4.1 the data processing and visualisation aspects of Task 4.3. Andreas played a leading role in more than 25 networking and systems projects in academia and industry (of which 10 were EU funded). He has collaborated internationally with partners across Europe and overseas, (co-)authored more than 150 peer-reviewed papers, and contributed to a number of research initiatives and standards.

Prof. David Hutchison is Professor of Computing at Lancaster University and founding Director of InfoLab21. He has been working at Lancaster for more than 25 years. David served on the TPC of top conferences such as ACM SIGCOMM, IEEE Infocom, and served on editorial boards of Springer’s Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Computer Networks Journal and IEEE TNSM, as well being editor of the Wiley book series in Computer Networks and Distributed Systems. He has helped build a strong research group in computer networks, which is well known internationally for contributions in a range of areas including Quality of Service architecture and mechanisms, multimedia caching and filtering, multicast engineering, active and programmable networking, content distribution networks, mobile IPv6 systems and applications, communications infrastructures for Grid based systems, testbed activities, and Internet Science. He now focuses largely on resilient and secure networking, with interests in the Future Internet and also the protection of critical infrastructures including industrial control systems. Within these area he has worked in various EU and research council projects, exceeding 25 with major leadership responsibilities. Within EASY-Res he will be responsible for the resilience strategies within WP4, specifically in Task 4.1 and 4.2
